Do Laptop Screen Repair

Laptop computers’ screens are very fragile and can break easily. There are a number of things that can actually go wrong with them. The following steps will detail things that you can do for laptop screen repair.

Step 1

If your laptop computers screen has gone completely blank, there could be a problem with the connection to the video controller on the mother board. The monitor is usually connected via a ribbon cable witch pushes into a socket. Make sure that the ribbon cable is completely connected. Alternatively the ribbon cable could also be loose where it connects to the monitor so check that connection too. If this doesn’t work, then there is probably internal problem with the monitor and it needs to be replaced.

Step 2

If your laptop computers screen is physically broken, then you have to replace it. It is a matter of a set of screws and removing the ribbon cable to take the laptop computers screen out. You can find a replacement screen online through a number of different resources. Make sure that the ribbon cable is replaced properly and that all screws are put back in the correct locations.

Step 3

If you are not comfortable working on your own laptop screen or are concerned that there is a bigger problem than just the screen, then you may want to have a professional look at it. You can either take it to a local electronics store or send it off to be replaced by the manufacturer

Install PHP on a Windows PC

Step 1

Download the installation file from the php website. This is a ZIP file, so you'll need some sort of unzipping software to download the installation file properly.

Step 2

Unzip the file with a program such as WinZip and place it somewhere easy to find, like C:\php.

Step 3

Enter an email address of your choosing, which will be used later as a login, and make sure the button next to "Display all errors warnings and notices" is checked.

Step 4

Pick the web server software you are using. Most people work off Apache, but PHP can work with multiple server softwares. Make sure ".php" is checked.

Step 5

Open Windows Explorer and find the file (if you're using Apache) "C:\Program Files\Apache Group\Apache2\conf" or wherever you installed your web server software. Installing the file within your web server software will make it easy to find later.

Step 6

Open the file httpd.conf in notepad and type the following: "LoadModule php5_module c://hp/php5apache2.dll" "AddType application/x-httpd-php.php" This will add the PHP application to your computer.

Step 7

Restart Apache (or whatever web server you're using) and this should automatically install PHP

How to Find Laptop Temperature

Laptop computers temperatures can affect the performance of the machine. It is important to know how to find laptop temperature so that you can avoid this and to avoid any permanent damage being done to the laptop computers. The following article will detail jot to find laptop temperature and help to understand the cause so it can be corrected.

Step 1

Your laptop computers often come with a software that will check and even track the laptop computers’ temperature. Check any of the utility software that is not part of your OS to see if you have software like this. It will usually be part of the software installed by the laptop manufacturer.

Step 2

If you do not have software to check this for you, there are lots of free products. Check trusted websites such as downloads.com for free software which can help you to find your laptop computers’ temperature. They typically install and download very easy and will come with instructions on how to use them.

Download from Rapidshare using proxy

  • I knew a lot of us here use Rapidshare to download and share a lot of stuff. It’s quite annoying when we were unable to download for a certain period after downloading a big file. What are going to be shared to day is how to download from Rapidshare using proxy so that you won’t have to face the 1 hour limitation problem again.

The programs that we need are a browser with ability to use proxy. I use Slimbrowser for two reasons:

  • I don’t want to delete my Firefox or IE cache and cookies files
  • It’s very lite and not a resource hogger

Steps/ How To:

  • Download the browser from this location Install it.
  • Find a proxy list. This trick requires the usage of proxy server to work. So don’t skip this step. Grab one proxy or more!
  • This is how you are going to setup your proxy:

Click Tools > Proxies > Organize Proxies

2) In the Name field, enter something to identify your proxy, for example, Brazil #1

3) In the first address field, enter the proxy address you got from Proxy4Free, for example, 200.162.195.62

4) In the second address field, enter the proxy port, for example, 3128

5) If you want to set the entered proxy as the default proxy, then click the Set As Current Proxy button

6) Click OK to close the dialog box * If you want to add more proxies, repeat the steps above again and again.

After you have setup the proxy, copy and paste the Rapidshare download link to your browsers’ address bar, and wait for the Rapidshare page to launch.

In Rapidshare website, do the followings:

  • Press enter and scoll down to bottom and click the FREE button
  • Wait until the counter reaches zero or use any auto-reveal-link-utility - Copy paste the download link into your favorite download manager, for example, Flashget - Download the file happily

Troubleshooting

  • Note that if Rapidshare gives you error like this;
  • This IP is not allowed to use free anonymous services..or Your IP, xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is downloading a file…
  • It’s time to use another proxy!!! In Slimbrowser, go to menu, Tools > Proxies and select another proxy you already entered before

After downloading a file, don’t forget to clear your trace!

  • In Slimbrowser go to menu Tools > Internet Options to open the Internet Options applet.
  • Click both Delete Cookies and Delete Files button to wipe out all references to Rapidshare.
  • If you need to download more files, repeat all steps from 1 to 6, and hopefully you’ll be happier than ever.

Tips:

  • Do not choose proxy with port 80
  • Avoid choosing proxies addresses beginning with 195 because some of them are slow.

How to Protect / Repair CD and DVD Discs

Now let us take a look at this condition. Imagine that you have a large quantity of CDs and DVDs where you burned your home-made movie, anime, short clip, or whatever file you wish to store as collection. How can you keep them in a good condition? If you got your CD and DVD discs damaged, how can you repair them? Here are some tips that will help you going through all the process to get the best result.

What factor cause shortening in disc’s life span?

Back to the fact, an investigation by a Dutch personal computer magazine, PC Active stated that some CD-Rs are unreadable in as little as two years, because the dyes in the CD’s recording layer fade. These dyes replace the aluminum “pits” of a music CD or CD-Rom, and the laser uses that layer to distinguish 0s from 1s.

When the CD is written, the writing laser ‘burns” the dye, which become dark to represent a “1″ while a “0″ will be left blank so that if the dye fades, there will be no difference in which it’s just a long string of nothing to the playback laser. In simple way, we can say that the best choice for us now is to store our valuable data in two copies. One as a stand-alone copy whiles the other one for playback.

Beside that, other factors which cause a decrease in disc life span are heat and physical damage such as scratch.

How to maintain our DVD/CD discs condition?

The first thing that one could practice to maintain the lifespan of CDs and DVDs are by not keeping them inside the optical or burner drive when he or she is not using them. This might sound simple but we cannot guarantee that all people have realized this. Actually when we keep the CD/DVD in our optical/burner drive, it will suffer from unnecessary heat as the operating system might order the drive to check for any CD/DVD disc every time during startup.

Burning in low speed such as 48X (for CD-R) will also reduce the chance of data corruption besides by concerning the brand of CDs/DVDs that we want to buy. Products from Imation works best for me. How about you? What brand of CD-R/DVD-R do you like to buy? Now let us head to what we are suppose to do when our discs are scratch:

What to do when CDs/DVD become scratched?

  1. Firstly, buy a liquid-based CD scratch repair kit a local store. Try to get a soft, lint-free cloth, such as one made for cleaning eyeglasses, if your scratch-repair kit doesn’t come with that. A
  2. Check manufacture’s instructions. Wipe across the CD, starting from the inside out in straight line. Never wipe in a circular pattern (common mistake). Repeat the process if necessary and allow the disc to dry. This method can also be applied to DVD disc.

If the method above does not work, consider this method as your last resort.

  1. Instead of using liquid-based CD scratch repair kit, use toothpaste.
  2. Rub the toothpaste over the entire bottom of the CD. Left it there for 1 minute, then hold the disc under flowing water and use “radial motion” to remove all the toothpaste. Finally, allow the disc to dry

How to Use the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console

The Recovery Console is a command-line tool that you can use to repair Windows if the computer does not start properly. You can start the Recovery Console from the Windows Server 2003 CD or at startup if the Recovery Console was previously installed to your computer.

Use the Recovery Console if you used the Last Known Good Configuration startup option and it was not successful and you cannot start the computer in Safe mode. Microsoft recommends that you use the Recovery Console method only if you are an advanced user who can use basic commands to identify and locate problem drivers and files.

To use Recovery Console, follow these steps:
  1. Insert the Windows Server 2003 installation CD in your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.
  2. When you are prompted during text-mode setup, press R to start the Recovery Console.
You can use the Recovery Console to:
  • Access the drives on your computer.
  • Enable or disable device drivers or services.
  • Copy files from the Windows Server 2003 installation CD or copy files from other removable media. For example, you can copy a file that you need that was deleted.
  • Create a new boot sector and a new master boot record (MBR). You might have to do this if there are problems starting from the existing boot sector

How to Start the Computer in Safe Mode

When you start the computer in Safe mode, Windows loads only the drivers and computer services that you need. You can use Safe mode when you have to identify and resolve problems that are caused by faulty drivers, programs, or services that start automatically.

If the computer starts successfully in Safe mode but it does not start in normal mode, the computer may have a conflict with the hardware settings or the resources. There may be incompatibilities with programs, services, or drivers, or there may be registry damage. In Safe mode, you can disable or remove a program, service, or device driver that may prevent the computer from starting.

To troubleshoot startup problems in Safe mode, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, and then click Shut Down.
  2. Click Restart, and then click OK.
  3. When you see the message Please select the operating system to start, press F8.
  4. In Windows Advanced Option Menu, use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode, and then press ENTER.

Note NUM LOCK must be off before the arrow keys on the numeric keypad will function.
  5. If you are running other operating systems on the computer, click Microsoft Windows Server 2003 on the list that is displayed, and then press ENTER.
  6. Do one of the following:
    • If the computer does not start in Safe mode, try starting the computer by using the Recovery Console. If you still cannot start the computer, look for possible hardware problems, such as defective devices, installation problems, cabling problems, or connector problems. Remove any newly added hardware, and then restart the computer to see if the problem is resolved.
    • If the computer starts in Safe mode, go to the next section to continue to troubleshoot the startup issue.

Fax/Modem Troubleshooting Tips

My modem is a 56K, but I can connect to the Internet only at slower speed.

The current copper wired telephone lines are limited only to about 53K. If you are connected only to 33.6 or 28.8K, check the following first:
  • Is your modem compatible with the modem used at your ISP?
  • Is your modem set up to run at full speed?
  • What's the maximum speed your ISP allows?
  • How far away are you from your ISP?
  • Some modems need special initiation strings to get full speed.
  • Some conditions are out of your control, such as weather and conditions of the telephone lines in your community.
  • Problems may occur when you are dialing through a phone system such as one in a hotel.

Modem answers incoming calls and then returns to the on-hook condition, disconnecting the caller:
This occurs most often when connecting to a UNIX system. In most case, the host does not prefer to see any result or command echo codes. If this is the case, the codes can be disabled by adding E0 Q1 to the modem configuration string.

The modem dials and appears to complete the connection, but the communications software does not enter the correct mode. (The screen remains blank)
This is normally caused by an I/O address or IRQ conflict. Verify that the COM port is not in use by any other serial device and if necessary use another COM port or I/O address setting. Refer to your computer manual on how to determine what serial ports are installed.

The modem dials and appears to complete the connection, but the communications software does not enter the correct mode. (The screen remains blank)

  • There may be an I/O conflict (see the solution for the previous problem).
  • The Result Codes may have been disabled by the software configuration set up. Check if Q1 is in the configuration or initialization string. If so, change it to Q0.
  • Your software may require numeric result codes rather than verbal result codes. Use either V0 for numeric result codes or V1 for verbal result codes in your initiazation or configuration string.
  • Some software require full extended result codes (i.e., CONNECT 33600 instead of CONNECT). This can be controlled by the Xn command. X0 sends a summarized code (CONNECT) and X4 sends a full extended code (CONNECT 33600)

The modem does not auto answer
The auto answer mode is determined by the S0 register. If S0 has been set to 0, the modem will not answer. Assign another value to S0 by entering the following command: S0=n, where n = the number of rings to occur before the call is answered (ATS0=2, the modem answers after two rings)

The modem always answers the phone.
Set the S0 register to 0. ATS0=0.

The communications software displays, "No Dial tone."
Make sure that your phone cable is working properly and that it is firmly seated to the phone socket at your phone jack and in the real panel of the modem.

A high pitched squeal is emitted from the external speakers
This phenomenon is "feedback" and occurs when the microphone is pointed at the external speaker or is close enough to pick up the speaker output. This may be remedied by using a unidirectional microphone, making sure that it is pointed away and as far from the speaker as functionally possible. Another option is to use a headset with an attached microphone

Troubleshooting Tips for a New Network Card

If you can't connect to a server or if Windows reports an error after you double-click Network Neighborhood, try the following first:

    • Make sure you're using the drivers that are on the driver’s disk that ships with the network interface card (NIC).
    • Make sure the driver is loaded and the protocols are bound. Check the Device Properties list for trouble indicators (an "X" or "!" symbol).
    • Test the NIC adapter with the diagnostic utilities that often came with the driver installation.
    • Check with your LAN administrator - you may need to install additional networking software.
  1. If the problem persists, follow these guidelines:
    • Make sure the cable is installed properly. The network cable must be securely attached at both RJ45 connections (adapter and hub). The maximum allowable distance from adapter to hub is 100 meters. If the cable is attached and the distance is within acceptable limits but the problem persists, try a different cable. If you're directly connecting two computers without a hub or switch, use a crossover cable.
    • Try another network cable.
    • Check the LED Lights on the NIC. Before the LEDs can be used for troubleshooting, the network interface card (NIC) must be connected to the network and the network driver must be installed. Most NICs come with LEDs near the connection. The meaning of the LED signals may be different from one manufacturer to the other. Here is a common LED description for 3COM 10/100BT dual speed NIC. Please consult your NIC manual for any difference.

  1. The computer hangs when the drivers are loaded.
    • Change the PCI BIOS interrupt settings. See your NIC and system manuals for more details.
    • If you are using EMM386, it must be version 4.49 or newer.
  2. Diagnostics pass, but the connection fails or errors occur.
    • At 100BT, use Category 5 wiring and make sure that the network cable is securely attached.
    • At 100BT, connect to a 100BT hub/switch (not 100Base-T4).
    • For NetWare, make sure you specify the correct frame type in your NET.CFG file.
    • Make sure the duplex mode setting on the adapter matches the setting on the switch.
  3. The LNK LED doesn't light.
    • Make sure you've loaded the network drivers.
    • Check all connections at the adapter and the hub/switch.
    • Try another port on the hub/switch.
    • Make sure the duplex mode setting on the adapter matches the setting on the hub/switch.
    • Make sure you have the correct type of cable between the adapter and the hub. 100Base-TX requires two pairs. Some hubs require a crossover cable while others require a straight-through cable.
  4. The ACT LED doesn't light.
    • Make sure you've loaded the correct network drivers.
    • The network may be idle. Try accessing a server.
    • The adapter isn't transmitting or receiving data. Try another adapter.
    • Make sure you're using two-pair cable for TX wiring.
  5. The adapter stopped working without apparent cause.
    • Run the diagnostics program that came with the NIC.
    • Try reseating the NIC in its slot, or try a different slot if necessary.
    • The network driver files may be corrupt or missing. Remove the drivers and then reinstall them.
  6. The Wake on LAN (WOL) feature is not working.
    • Make sure the WOL cable is attached and that power is being applied to the computer.
    • Check the BIOS for its WOL setting. Some computers may need to be configured for WOL.
    • Make sure the network cable is fully attached to the adapter.
  7. Crossover cable troubleshooting tips. When you work with network cabling, concentrators (hubs or switch), and NICs from different venders, it is possible to connect everything and still have no communication between file servers and workstations.
When there are several unknown variables, it is difficult to determine which component is broken. Use these tips to isolate the problem.
    • Determine whether your equipment complies with the 10Base-T or 100Base-TX standard. This is particularly important for hubs and switches.
    • Connect a straight-through cable from the PC to the hub. The hub performs an internal crossover so that the signal can go from TD+ to RD+ and TD- to RD- (see How to Make Network Cables). When you look at an RJ-45 connector from the front, pin 1 is identified on the left-hand side when the metal contacts are facing up.
    • Make sure that the TD+ and TD- wires are twisted together, and that the RD+ and RD- wires are twisted together. Using wires from opposing pairs can cause signals to be lost. For a 100Base-TX cable, pins #1 and #2 , and #3 and #6 must be on the same twisted strand.
  8. When there is doubt whether a hub is performing correctly, or if the impedance settings are in question, a crossover cable can help you isolate the failing component:
    • Connect a file server and a client PC back to back with a crossover cable to verify that the NIC and network operating system are properly configured.
    • To make a crossover cable, simple connect TD+ to RD+ and TD- to RD-. The cable performs the crossover that is usually performed by the hub. Make sure that two twisted-pair wires are used. If the file server and client PC function together as a small network, then either the existing cabling or the hub is the problem.
    • If there is a proper crossover, the appropriate LED comes on. If there is a straight-through connection, the LED does not light. A blinking LED indicates that there is a polarity mismatch (that is, TD+ to RD- instead of TD+ to RD+)

Various problem for a New Motherboard

More than 70% of all computer problems are related to cabling and connections. Ensure all cables are connected and connected firmly. IDE and floppy ribbon cables and power cables can often go loose. Ensure microprocessor, memory modules, and adapters such as video card are inserted correctly and didn't "pop-up" due to vibration.
